Keep Your Eye On The Ball

About Staverton Park

 Staverton Park

Hole 1: A right to left shape tends to favour this tough tee shot as the fairway slopes and the huge ash tree blocks the drive starting left. A very long bunker on the left approach to the green prevents shots running in from that side

Hole 2: A long tee shot carrying the bunker sets up an easier second shot if going for the green in two. However play this hole as a three shotter and you will set up more birdie chances in the long run.

Hole 3: A tee shot tight to the fairway bunker sets up the shortest second shot, be aware anything right and long will run out of fairway. Avoid cutting the corner as a lost ball may result.

Hole 4: Take one more club. A ball landing short of the green will sty short. Bunkers are short left and greenside right.

Hole 5: A tee shot to the middle right of the fairway opens up the view to the green. A long hitter can carry the corner in most conditions.

Hole 6: Average hitters should aim at the mound of the fairway. Take one extra club for the second shot.

Hole 7: This hole should justify a SI 1 on sheer length alone. Favour left side for tee shot.

Hole 8: Anything but a well struck iron, even from the yellow tee’s is likely to find a sandy trap

Hole 9: An accurate tee shot avoiding the left side bunkers is required followed by a high flighted second shot to hold the raised green. The pot bunkers in front of the green can be a card destroyer

Hole 10: A tee shot that requires accuracy. Long hitters favour the left side tee shot. Aim left of the green and use the contours to avoid flirting with the right side greenside bunker

Hole 11: Keep your tee shot as far right as you dare, this gives an easier second shot. Lay up short of the stream if you are not confident of carrying the stream and you will be setting up a birdie chance
Hole 12: Choose half a club more, as playing slightly uphill

Hole 13: There is only one option with the tee shot and that’s straight, slightly right of the large ash tree is ideal. If you do not get to the top of the hill allow an extra club for the second shot. Bunkers surround the green left and right.

Hole 14: A left to right tee shot will hold the sleeping fairway. Bunkers guard the fairway left and right. The bunker short of the green is waiting for a slightly mis-hit second shot

Hole 15: A good tee shot here, avoiding the right hand rough will set up a good birdie opportunity whether going for the green in two or not

Hole 16: Straight forward tee shot, avoid taking on the greenside bunker if pin is on the left

Hole 17: Play this hole as a dog leg to avoid the lright hand bunkers, the second shot is generally half a club less than it looks.

Hole 18: An accurate tee shot is required laying up short of the left hand bunker, this will leave an easier to judge second shot to this wide but shallow green

The Tricky Hole

11thA true Par 5. Take a risk and you can easily walk off with a birdie 4. A long sweeping dog leg where a good drive down the right, will open up the green for you to take on the stream that runs across the fairway and the overhanging trees on the left.
Many golfers stand on the 11th tee hoping for a birdie 4, 10 minutes later standing on the 12th tee they are often delighted with a 5 or even relieved to have escaped with a 6

A Tip from the Top

To dramatically improve your performance and help you tackle the Staverton challenge, always remember to warm up before your round. A basket of balls at the driving range will mean you hit the first tee ready for action. Once out on the course, substitute some length for accuracy, better scores come from the fairways

Play It safe

3rd – Dogleg Par 4, the aggressive golfer will cut the corner and risk the water. The sensible amongst us will lay up to the corner with a long iron, leaving a mid iron to the green.

Go for Glory

18th – A great finishing hole. A carry over the water is made easier by the bravest tee shot leaving a shorter approach shot to an undulating green, walk off with a 4 and the first drink in the relaxing atmosphere of the clubhouse tastes that bit sweeter.
